Tom Hanks to play Walt Disney.

Τομ Χανκς: Θα υποδυθεί τον Γουόλτ Ντίσνεϊ

Tom Hanks is set to play Walt Disney in a film about the making of the children's classic Mary Poppins, reports Deadline. He looks likely to star opposite Emma Thompson as Australian author PL Travers, who held out for more than 14 years before finally agreeing to allow Hollywood to adapt her book.
The Blind Side's John Lee Hancock will take the director's chair on Saving Mr Banks, working from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel, which made last year's Black List of the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood. It tells the story of Travers' deep discomfort over the film version of what was a highly personal book. Mary Poppins, published in 1934, was inspired by hardships in the writer's own life, as well as her relationship with her father. Travers was not impressed by the final 1964 film, being particularly disappointed with the animated sequences, and subsequently refused to sell any of her other stories to Disney. There are eight novels in total about the magical English nanny who turns up at the Banks household in London to care for the childen after being blown in on the east wind.
Disney's musical starred an Oscar-winning Julie Andrews in her Hollywood debut as Poppins and is best known for songs such as A Spoonful of Sugar and Chim Chim Cher-ee (which won the 1965 best song Academy Award), as well as American actor Dick Van Dyke's questionable cockney accent in the role of jack-of-all-trades Bert.

CinemaCon: Footage of 'The Hobbit' draws mixed reaction.

Preview of "The Hobbit" shown at CinemaCon

This year, exhibitors were able actually to see the new technology put to the test in a feature film with 10 minutes of footage from Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."
Jackson has shot the new film, due out in December, at 48 frames per second. For roughly 80 years, the standard industry frame rate -- the frequency at which images are projected -- has been 24 frames per second (Hence the name of this blog). Cameron, incidentally, has vowed to shoot the sequel to "Avatar" at an even quicker rate of 60.
In a filmed video message from New Zealand shown to exhibitors Tuesday, Jackson implored theater owners to project his new film at 48 frames per second. The new speed, he said, gives the "illusion of real life, where movement feels smoother, and you're not dealing with strobing."
Indeed, the footage shown did seem hyper-realistic. An opening aerial shot of dramatic rocky mountains appeared clearer than the images in most nature documentaries. But the effect was different when applied to scenes with actors dressed in period costume, whose every move -- and pore -- was crystal clear. Such realism put off some trade show attendees, who complained the footage didn't feel enough like a traditional film.
"It looked like a made-for-TV movie," said one projectionist, who requested anonymity because of his affiliation with a competing studio. "It was too accurate -- too clear. The contrast ratio isn't there yet -- everything looked either too bright or black."
One Los Angeles-based film buyer was more enthusiastic, saying that, though he felt like the footage looked live, he still found the technology intriguing.
"The question is if people want to watch movies that really look real or not. I was expecting a subtle difference, but this was dramatic," he said. "Might that work against a narrative? I don't know. But I'm not going to judge it based on 10 minutes."
"The Hobbit" footage was part of a Warner Bros. presentation that also included glimpses of highly anticipated projects like "The Great Gatsby" and "The Dark Knight Rises." Baz Lurhmann sent in a video message from Australia to introduce his 3-D adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, which seems to focus heavily on the romantic relationship between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. Christopher Nolan was on hand to present some brief snippets of the new Batman movie, while Tim Burton brought out surprise guest Johnny Depp to drum up interest in their "Dark Shadows."
While Depp's appearance didn't generate as much excitement in the audience as did Sacha Baron Cohen's on Monday night, many in the crowd still seemed pleased by the arrival of the A-lister. Not that he hung around for long. Dressed in his typical funky garb -- a long scarf hanging from his pants pocket and a pair of dangly earrings lost in his hair -- Depp walked on stage for about a minute, said "have fun," and immediately retreated.

Watch: New 'Prometheus' Featurette.

Well, a new featurette has made its way online, and there’s more to see by way of awe-inspiring moments as the featurette opens with the text “A Film Thirty Years in the Making.” There’s some impressive B-roll footage of Scott in his element, scouting locations and directing some intense-looking scenes for the big-budget picture. It sort of turns into a Ridley Scott lovefest by the climax, with stars like Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron and Logan Marshall-Green giving him high-praise, with Theron calling him her “fantasy director.” Though don’t worry, there’s a series of sizzling money shots too, with what looks to be a giant action set-piece amid some sort of extraterrestrial dust storm as well as a few ships colliding, with the real treat being able to see inside of what many believe is the den of the “Alien” creatures. We’ll have to wait and see how this all looks in context, but again, Fox certainly isn’t looking to slow our heart rate down in regards to this feature anytime soon.
“Prometheus” starts its theatrical rollout in many European countries on May 30th, while its U.K. release is set for June 1st with the U.S. getting the movie on June 8th. We’re waiting with bated, xenomorph-loving breath. Check out the video below along with images (via Kinopoisk) from the world of "Prometheus."

First Look!!!! Tarantino's Django Unchained

Django

Leonardo DiCaprio and Quentin Tarantino fans just got their first proper glimpse of their next film Django Unchained. The new stills of the film feature DiCaprio as the rustic Calvin Candie and Jamie Foxx as Django.
The story is about Django (Jamie Foxx), who, with the help of his mentor, a slave-turned-bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Waltz) sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner (DiCaprio).
Two stills of the film were released by Sony Pictures. In one, Christoph Waltz (who won a best supporting actor Oscar for his role as a Jew-hunting Nazi in Inglourious Basterds) and Jamie Foxx (who won the best actor Oscar for his role as Ray Charles in Ray) stroll through a classic 19th century Western town.

The second image shows Leonardo DiCaprio as the evil plantation owner Calvin Candie.

Weinstein Company had also released a minimalistic teaser poster of the film on Yahoo! Movies last week. The poster shows two silhouettes outlined against a red backdrop with a black chain hanging over them, the poster confirms that the film will be out by the end of 2012.
